AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, shared AMD’s vision on how high-performance and adaptive computing transforms lives by addressing the world’s toughest problems at CES 2023.

This is a real significant time to be present in the semiconductor industry. Our world is powered by semiconductors. Intelligence needs computing power! There is an incredible surge in demand that has stressed all levels of the supply chain.

The pandemic made it very clear that semiconductors are absolutely essential for everything that we do. Every product, every experience, is virtually powered by semiconductors. Chips have become the enabler in our modern lives. With the growth of AI, technology is becoming even more smarter, such as cloud computing, connectivity, healthcare, industrial, automotive, gaming, etc. AMD is creating solutions for the world’s most important challenges around high-performance and adaptive computing.

AI megatrend for future
AI is the megatrend for the future of technology. AMD announced the Ryzen 7040 series processors for ultra-thin notebooks. It uses 4nm technology. We have deep partnerships with the ecosystem. AMD is also introducing the Ryzen 7045HX processors for mobile.

Panos Panay, EVP and Chief Product Officer, Microsoft, said Microsoft and AMD have a long history of incredible partnership and impact. “The AMD Ryzen 7040 Series, paired with the latest Windows 11 updates, is the next step on our journey together. Leveraging AMD silicon, along with our AI investments in Windows, will unlock groundbreaking experiences for our customers.” Microsoft Xbox is powered by AMD SoCs. On Azure, it comes in beautifully too.

Panay added that AI is the defining technology today. AMD has been at the forefront of compute. It is also at the forefront of AI with Ryzen. We have Windows Studio Effects with advanced AI video enhancements. We are bringing in eye contact, automatic framing, etc. You get incredible AI power with AMD. AI is also going to re-invent how you are doing things on Windows. We are now taking the right silicon to the right place.

Hybrid work
Ms. Su said we have been doing lot of work remotely. About 25 percent of people believe their organizations are prepared for hybrid work. Deep co-engineering is required to make hybrid work frictionless for users and IT departments.

Enrique Lores, HP President and CEO, said we are experiencing biggest change in how people work. In five years from now, 50 percent of the US workforce are going to be freelancers. We are excited about the changes and opportunities. Teams have been working on new environments. When HP and AMD teams work together, magic happens. We are driving customer satisfaction.

HP DragonFly Pro series laptops offers long battery life, collaboration enhancements, etc. It is designed for addressing new customers. You get all-day battery life, connectivity, etc. We also provide right customer support. We have built HP Presence technology that ushers in new era of hybrid work. Lores announced a full portfolio of solutions in spring 2023, with innovations from both companies.

World of gaming
Ms. Su next moved to gaming, a DNA for AMD. Its Ryzen and Radeon processors are all over the place. AMD Ryzen 7945HX series are for gamers and creators who want the highest performance in a notebook. We have taken this to a different performance level. We are launching RX 7000 series for laptops. We also have AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT. We will be bringing more gaming laptops in Feb. 2023.

Matt Zielinski, EVP and President, Lenovo, said we have collaborated extensively with AMD. Our partnership is built on decades. We announced ThinkPad Z series last year. We are launching new PCs at CES. We are unveiling Legion Pro Series laptops using AMD 7045 processors. Our teams work together to push the envelope. Gamers will enjoy the experience on the laptops. AI is also key for gaming experience, and elevates it. AI improves network bandwidth, lowering power consumption, increasing fps, etc. In the future, we will be having 50+ designs in laptops in 2023. We are just getting started.

Focus on desktops
Ms. Su said we are now bringing AMD 3D V-Cache to our 7000 processors. These large caches are important for gaming. AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D brings 15 percent more performance than 5800X3D. We are also bringing 3D V-Cache to Ryzen 9 7950X3D processors. It is the ultimate processor for gamers and creators. We will be bundling Star Wars Jedi Survivor later this month. We are also launching the fastest gaming processors in the world that will be available Feb. 2023 for desktops.

Adaptive computing and healthcare
Adaptive computing solutions allow us to change hardware multiple times. We are no. 1 provider of adaptive computing, with over 6,000 customers in healthcare, industrial, etc.

Bob DeSantis, EVP and Chief Product Officer, Intuitive Surgical, said surgery can be improved by leveraging advanced processing and electromechanical systems. We work at an intersection of healthcare and technology to help surgeons take care of patients.

Da Vinci surgical system.

The Da Vinci surgical system is a robotic surgical system that uses a minimally invasive surgical approach, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical. It is used for prostatectomies, and increasingly for cardiac valve repair, and for renal and gynecologic surgical procedures.

Within the short time spent on stage, another 12 patients will be using Da Vinci platform. AMD is critical for us. With robotic surgery, motion control, visualization, and safety mechanism are essential. He used lung cancer as an example. Time really matters here! We have AI and AR integrated into our ecosystem and platform. We provide better and safer surgery.

Ms. Lu added that AMD is also announcing Vitis medical imaging libraries. Laurent Pelissier, Founder and Chief Innovation Officer, Clarius Mobile Health, said we have created a handheld ultrasound solution that is wireless and inexpensive. AMD Zync has been a gamechanger here. We can add software, automation, and AI to a single platform.

The metaverse through AR is advanced surgery and training. We are seeing some amazing breakthroughs. Ms. Peggy Johnson, CEO, MagicLeap, said progress made in AR is accelerating. Businesses are beginning to understand the value of this technology. AR and VR are different technologies. AR is about merging digital with physical worlds. The digital content can now become digital twin of a factory. We can also overlay surgical plan for a surgeon to operate.

You can also connect with remote experts. They can guide you through complicated procedures. We have dynamic dimming that allows you to darken digital content, so it appears even more solid. We needed high-performance processor. We have partnered with AMD. We have collaborated for industry’s most advanced AR platform.

Customers are using MagicLeap, especially, patients and doctors. In certain procedures, surgeon has to guide catheters through a blood vessel. They do that looking at a TV screen. It’s a gamechanger for the industry. Magic Leap 2 is now the first AR device to receive 60601 certification for use in the operating room.

Space odyssey
AMD has also been an active partner in aerospace. Dr. Cady Coleman, Former NASA astronaut, said as a material scientist, our first mission was a science mission. We designed ISS as a space mission. We also developed the Chandra telescope. Chandra X-ray Observatory, previously known as the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility, is a flagship-class space telescope launched aboard Space Shuttle Columbia during STS-93 by NASA on July 23, 1999.

Weightlessness allows us to do experiments that are not possible on earth. It is pivotal for improving lives on earth. AMD Virtex FPGAs are powering Perseverance Mars Rover. Space exploration is about investigating into the unknown. We have to plan missions with the technologies that we have.

AMD also participated in the Artemis 1 Mission. Artemis I is first in a series of complex missions that will enable human exploration to the Moon and Mars. It was a test flight for Artemis and Orion capsule. NASA launched the most powerful rocket to the moon in over 50 years. The next mission will have humans abroad for landing on the moon. In the future, people could be living on the moon. We also need to bring more people into such environments, and look at STEM education. We need to tell stories about our work and discoveries that can ignite curiosity. Artemis goals can go on to become a reality.

Ms. Su added that Avatar: The Way of Water is based on AMD chips. She concluded that the AMD 4th Gen EPYC provides performance advantage over competition. We also spend time on energy efficiency. AMD previewed Alveo V70 AI inference accelerator. It delivers 400 trillion AI operations per second. We are looking at processing more data. AMD Instinct MI 300 is the first APU that integrates data center CPU and GPU in one design. AMD Instinct MI300 brings CPU cores, GPU compute, and memory all onto a single package.
